Realistic 3D Grass Simulation in Blender 3D

Simulating realistic vegetation is much easier today than it was a couple of years ago. The number of automations, assets and Plugins are growing. Still, making 3D Grass all by yourself was something I’ve always wanted to try.

Modeling & Grass Simulation

I modeled about 20 unique Grass Models in Blender 2.9 with varying health and growth states and populated them randomly with a couple of Particle Systems.

Shading

Shading was the biggest task for me since it was important to achieve a realistic look while keeping the shader light and compact in order to reduce Render Times. Once the look was final the shader was reworked from the ground up once again – Different variables of the grass can now be changed with a few simple sliders. In a matter of seconds you can create many different patches of grass just by dragging a few sliders around.
